YMCA Youth Parliament About the YMCA ACT Youth Parliament The YMCA ACT Youth Parliament gives Canberra’s young people a unique chance to participate in authentic parliamentary and legal processes, to develop leadership and advocacy skills and to build lasting friendships. Youth Parliament is an annual program which provides participants with a valuable opportunity to speak out on the issues that are closest to them. Youth Members will create a Bill with the aim of solving a problem they are passionate about. Throughout the program they will research the problem, propose alternative solutions and negotiate amongst themselves the best possible solution. Participants will then collaborate to write a piece of draft legislation to be presented to the Youth Parliament. This Bill is then debated on the floor of the ACT Legislative Assembly as part of week-long residential camp. Youth Parliamentarians will also represent their electorates and their peers as advocates for youth issues and provide youth perspectives on the governance of the ACT during additional Parliamentary debates. The YMCA ACT Youth Parliament program gives young people aged 15-25 a forum in which to express their opinions and learn about legal and parliamentary processes. Importantly, the program also offers young people an opportunity to build lasting personal friendships and professional networks across the ACT. Young people of all cultural, religious and socio-economic backgrounds are encouraged to participate in the program and come together to debate issues facing our young people as well as the wider population.
